How Much Does Social Media Management Cost for a Small Business in Michigan?

If you’re a small business owner, you’ve probably asked yourself this question: How much does social media management cost?
And honestly, there isn’t one simple answer.
You can find social media management services for a few hundred dollars a month, while other agencies charge several thousand. So how do you know what you’re actually paying for, and more importantly, what your business actually needs?
As a Michigan-based freelance marketer, I work with small businesses that want a stronger online presence without paying for an agency they don’t need. Here’s what you should know about social media management cost before deciding what’s right for your business.
So, How Much Does Social Media Management Cost?
For a small business, social media management can typically range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars per month, depending on the level of service.
The biggest factor isn't simply how many posts you're getting. It's what goes into creating and managing those posts.
A basic package might include:
A set number of social media posts each month
Caption writing
Basic graphics
Content scheduling
Hashtag research
A simple content calendar
More comprehensive social media management may include:
Social media strategy
Custom graphics and videos
Photography or in-person content creation
Reels and short-form video
Community engagement
Social media monitoring
Content planning
Monthly analytics and reporting
Platform management
Ongoing strategy adjustments
So when comparing social media management cost, don't just compare the number of posts.
Compare what is actually being done for your business.
Why Does Social Media Management Cost So Much?
I hear this one a lot.
"You're charging that much just to make some posts?" Well... no.
Good social media management isn't just opening Canva, making a graphic, writing "Happy Monday!" and scheduling it for 9 a.m.
There's strategy behind the content. Before creating a post, you need to understand the business, its customers, its goals, its brand, and what it's trying to accomplish.
Then there's the actual work:
Strategy → Content Planning → Writing → Design → Video → Scheduling → Engagement → Analytics → Adjustments
That's what you're paying for. The posts are just the part you see.
What Affects Social Media Management Cost?
There are several things that can change the cost of social media management.
1. How Many Platforms You're Managing
Managing one social media account is different from managing Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
Every platform has its own audience, content style, and best practices. A business that wants to maintain two platforms will generally pay less than a business that wants a full presence across four or five.
2. How Much Content You Need
Posting four times a month is very different from posting three times a week. And video takes considerably more time than a simple graphic.
If your strategy includes Reels, TikToks, photography, carousels, graphics, and other custom content, expect the investment to increase.
3. Who Creates the Content
Some businesses provide all of their photos and videos.
Others need someone to come in and actually capture content.
If your social media manager is creating the content from start to finish, that additional work will affect the overall social media management cost.
4. Engagement
Do you want someone to simply schedule your posts? Or do you want someone monitoring comments, responding to messages, interacting with other accounts, and helping build your online community?
Those are two very different services.
5. Strategy
This is one of the biggest differences between simply hiring someone to post and hiring someone to manage your social media.
A social media manager should be thinking about questions like:
Who are we trying to reach?
What do they care about?
What do we want them to do?
What type of content is performing?
What isn't working?
How can we improve next month?
How does social media support the larger business?
Because ultimately, likes aren't the goal. Your business goals are.
What Should You Look for When Comparing Social Media Management Services?
Don't automatically choose the cheapest option. And don't automatically assume the most expensive option is the best one either. Instead, ask what you're actually getting.
Before hiring someone, find out:
How many posts are included?
Which platforms will they manage?
Are graphics and videos included?
Who provides the photos and content?
Is engagement included?
Will they create a content calendar?
Do they provide analytics or monthly reporting?
Is there a strategy behind the content?
Will they meet with you or check in regularly?
Can the service be customized to your business?
These questions will give you a much better idea of the true value behind the social media management cost.
Is Hiring a Social Media Manager Worth It for a Small Business?
It can be. Especially if you're currently doing everything yourself.
You're running the business, answering emails, talking to customers, managing employees, handling finances, ordering supplies, and somehow you're also expected to come up with three Instagram posts every week.
Something has to give.
Hiring a social media manager allows you to hand off one of those responsibilities to someone who understands the strategy behind it. And you don't necessarily need someone working full-time.
For many small businesses, a freelance social media manager can provide the support they need without the cost of adding another full-time employee.
Social Media Management Doesn't Have to Be One-Size-Fits-All
This is one of the biggest reasons I started Marketing By Marissa. I don't believe every small business needs are the same.
Some businesses just need content creation. Others need scheduling only. And some want the full package — content creation, scheduling, engagement, reporting, and ongoing management. The more of those pieces you need, the larger the budget. But larger budget doesn't mean breaking the bank. You just have to find the right person.
